The Georgia Northeastern encourages safety in every aspect
of the railroading industry. This includes promoting
highway-rail crossing safety and enforcing trespassing laws.
Highway-Rail grade crossings are dangerous places. The Georgia Northeastern
has a total of XXX crossings along its route; this includes a few major
thoroughfares such as Sandy Plains, GA Highway 92, and GA Highway 140. Please keep these important facts in mind when coming up to a grade crossing:
- It is just as illegal to pass an activated grade-crossing signal as it is to run a red light -
and much more deadly. If you think the signal is malfunctioning, call the number at the bottom of our site, or call 911.
- If you see a train approaching, never try to beat it to the crossing - even if you tie, you lose. A
train can't swerve out of the way to avoid you.
- If there is traffic stopped ahead, and you cannot clear the tracks, then stay back! Wait until the opening ahead is large enough for your car to completely clear 6 feet beyond the rails.
- If you stall or get trapped on the rails, leave and move away from the vehicle immediately,
and contact emergency personnel.
- If there are more than one set of tracks at the crossing, always be wary of trains
approaching on all sets of tracks, from either direction.
- Keep in mind that trains cannot stop quickly! At 55mph, it can take a train over a mile to come
to a complete stop, with the brakes fully applied.
- Always expect a train! Freight trains do not run on a schedule, and can approach at any
time.
Walking
and loitering on the right of way is dangerous, deadly, and trespassing. If you are going to be
walking along a sidewalk or street that borders track, make sure to:
- Always keep an eye out ahead of you and behind you along the tracks.
- Trains do not blow their horn between long stretches of track with no nearby crossings
or bridges.
- Do not place anything on the rails. Coins placed on the rails to be flattened by engines can be
forced from the rails at high velocity and cause serious injury. Larger objects could create an
extremely unsafe condition for the train crew and a derailment.
- Do not walk on the tracks or the trackbed! Aside from being private property and considered trespassing, it is very dangerous and could result in injury or death.
